Gnomes
 Gnome Tattoo Design Meanings -
Gnomes are the dwarfish imps of Northern European mythology.
Like Trolls, they liked to live underground, too, and according to
Swedish legend, were the guardians of mineral treasure. It wasn't
surprising to find them frequently in quarries and mines, even
preventing miners from entering their mines, or so the stories went.

Around 1850, gnomes began to appear in German gardens, this time as
terra-cotta figures. Since gnomes were regarded as hard workers,
having them in a garden was considered beneficial, especially if
they came to life at night to lend a hand, as folks liked to
believe. Like the trolls of Scandinavia, gnomes were not a pretty
sight, being generally misshapen and often hump-backed. But they got
cuter over time, and now bless domestic gardens all over the world. |
