NICE BOTTOM. GOOD HEART. AND THE REST'S NOT SO BAD EITHER
SOME BOATS, LIKE SOME PEOPLE, BECOME MORE BEAUTIFUL AS YOU GET BELOW THE SURFACE.
(Not all Boats, nor all people) As a boat for-instance, take that three-inch thick, solid steel keel. A big steel slab is not immediately beautiful, but when you the sound of steel as opposed to fiberglass grinding against rock, it will suddenly become the most beautiful thing on earth. Similarly, the optional commercial-duty hydraulic propulsion system won't turn heads at the marina, but it will become prettier in your eyes after twenty-thousand hours of trouble-free service, doing the job of a variable pitch prop, with less complexity - and thus more reliability. The beauty of that reinforced steel rudder will become apparent when something hits it. The welded half-pipe keel cooling will become a thing of beauty when you realize you have simply ignored it for a few decades, while normal finned keel coolers might have been damaged. Cast your eyes on the impenetrable bulbous bow, a flawlessly smooth hemisphere, rolled of almost indestructible half-inch steel plate - with a SERIOUS bow thruster. LOVELY.
In ten foot tides, while other boats are leaning on their chines or propped up with timbers, risking their stabilizers - your bilge keels will be objects of adoration. (All our boats stand level on their own bottoms on jagged rocks, soft mud or asphalt). You'll love your bilge keels even more when you hit a rock or log and do no damage to the stabilizer fins! And when you wander all over far less in following seas than the next guy, you'll practically WORSHIP them!
It all adds up to the prettiest (most functional) bottom in the industry. It's even a DOUBLE bottom: The skin is 5/16" steel, virtually impenetrable by rocks, logs, shipping containers or anything else. A nice bottom indeed - one that could eventually save yours.
MURPHY BE DAMNED: SAFETY EXPERTS, PILOTS, ENGINEERS, & MD'S CHOOSE CAPE HORNS. We engineer and build the world's toughest, safest, longest-range cruisers. Period. We build the vessel for left brain AND right brain thinkers.
In just over two years we have sold SIXTEEN of them from 55'-85' - which may be some kind of a record. But we are even more proud of WHO buys them.
As a Cape Horn owner you'll be in elevated company. Over 75% of our owners are pilots of private and/or commercial aircraft - because pilots intuitively look for engineering excellence and don't like tempting the ubiquitous Mr. Murphy. About a third are engineers. One of them is both - the former head of Aircraft safety at Boeing, among the world's leading safety engineers. We even have former US Navy Navy Officers. Several highly experienced sailors, including some well-known world circumnavigators. Several MDs. But none of these technically-minded safety experts wants to live in a utility vessel - they and their spouses want comfort and tasteful luxury in their retirement home. They tend to have elevated good taste. We build yachts for the left brain as well as for the right, catering to heart AND mind.
THE DEEPER YOU LOOK, THE LONGER YOU LIVE WITH HER,
THE PRETTIER SHE BECOMES.
Durability
in boats, as in other relationships, is a beautiful thing. You sense it
the moment you step aboard, this is no flash-in-the-pan affair. She is
safe, solid - at heart a TRUE ship, not a wannabe or a look-alike. The
real thing. Built the old fashioned way, like the world's best best
commercial and military vessels: Out of steel, by hand. Built to last,
not just to sell. A vessel you can live with for a long time - in more
ways than one.
But superficial beauty counts too. The furnishings are built by our
own team of world-class craftsmen to the highest global standards. It
takes thousands more man-hours to do it right, but that's the only way
we'll do it. Contemporary elegance is applied to traditional seaworthy
design. Inside you see abundant light, openness, much more living space,
more storage, more seating and superior joinery - compared to any other
yacht of this class.
IT BOILS DOWN TO BALANCING PRIORITIES. Below we list some of
ours, in order of importance. As you go through them, see how well ours
match yours - decide if we are on the same wave length. If not, we don't
have the right boat for you. On the other hand, if our mutual priorities
match, we probably DO have your yacht, because no one else on earth
engineers and builds a line of ships as muscular, yet at the same time
as elegant as these:
#1 SAFETY: Beyond ABS commercial fishing vessel steel
construction, far beyond yacht standards; Self-righting in 3-5 seconds
from 180 degrees; Compartmentalized double bottom, engineered so that a
hole in any compartment (s) need not seriously affect stability:
watertight bulkheads; Heavy duty commercial, 1/2" tempered windows and
Freeman doors will survive a roll-over or very large breaking waves;
Hull designed to handle rocks and serious collisions; Fireproof hull;
Pre-plumbed spare pumps and other redundant systems are everywhere; The
industry's best fuel filtration/polishing; Hydraulically (or
mechanically) driven screw (s), slow-turning and virtually impossible to
ding; Commercial/military 20,000 hour drive trains; Highly buoyant bows
are almost impossible to bury; Sea anchor attachment points at the water
line; and so on.
#2 COMFORTABLE RIDE: Intentionally heavy boats, 60-160 tonnes,
yield a gentler motion; Single chines roll far less than a round bottom;
Bilge keels passively reduce rolling another 20% at all speeds, even at
anchor; Bulbous bows reduce pitching and yield other benefits; a very
quiet boat.
#3 RANGE: Complete self-sufficiency for 4,500-9,000 nautical
miles at realistic cruising speeds, meaning you are never forced to buy
fuel at outrageous prices and can cross any ocean with plenty of reserve
for weather or side trips.
#4 LIVING SPACE: We put the engine room all the way aft which
has other advantages besides quiet: The best real estate, midships, is
freed up for living quarters. The Cape Horns have accommodations
equivalent to boats 10' longer. All have a clean room with laundry.
Popular options include an exercise room with workout machinery and twin
fold-up bunks.
#5 DURABILITY: The entire exterior has six commercial coatings
including zinc, which keeps steel virtually rust-free forever. Rust is
not the issue it once was - coatings have come a long way in the past
couple decades. Today, properly treated steel is EASIER to maintain than
fibreglass, lasts much longer, can be repaired anywhere - and is MUCH
safer. Our drive trains will do many world circumnavigations between
overhauls. Every system is over-built.
#6 BEAUTY AND LUXURY: We pull out all the stops on interiors,
on a par with the best in the world - tasteful, understated elegance in
golden maple or cherry. Only the best appliances and ship systems. Form
follows function: No wood outside, just gleaming stainless trim. Low
maintenance is in itself beautiful.
#7 PRICE: World-class ships outfitted like the finest yachts -
for less than the price of a mere yacht, thanks in part to the Canadian
dollar. Building in North America means inspection during construction
is easy and inexpensive. In Canada you avoid the anxiety associated with
offshore construction.
HOW DID OUR PRIORITIES MATCH? If reasonably well, then I
suggest you order our 70-page color book, now in its 14th Edition. If
you have one of the older versions, it might be worth investing in a new
one, since much has been added. Our book explains everything in plain
English and considerable detail - as no spec sheet or glossy eight-pager
can do. Most people consider it an objective, interesting and
educational read. The book costs US 20$ (sorry no freebies), payable by
check or credit card. Call at any time, I look forward to discussing
YOUR ideas as to what constitutes a beautiful yacht.
